The og:image tucked into the code of Blue Ridge Farmers Co-op's website is still the old Southern States Cooperative tag, and more than one regular will tell you the same thing at the register: this used to be Southern States, if they're not mistaken. The name on the beige building with the blue roof has changed, but the job hasn't. This is the place you come to when you need three kinds of wild bird seed, a bag of clover seed, or the specific electric-fence clips the big-box stores stopped carrying. As one longtime customer put it, it's where you go for the essential gardening and farming supplies the chains just don't stock, not even Tractor Supply.

The co-op sums itself up in a line that's hard to improve on: "From Livestock to Lovebirds." That's the actual range here. Pallets of horse feed and cattle rations on one side, nursery plants and songbird seed on the other, and a knowledgeable person who will walk you through the difference. The Harris Street store at 810 Harris St, Charlottesville, VA 22903 is one of two Blue Ridge locations; the other sits across town at Leake Square.

What they carry

The floor is organized around three broad worlds: Pet, Lawn and Garden, and Farm. On the feed side, this means quality livestock, equine, and pet foods, with brand names that tell you who the clientele is. Nutrena and Triple Crown for horses, Purina across the board, Standlee for forage, and Earthborn Holistic for the dog and cat crowd. Stihl handles the outdoor-power end of things. There's a large selection of wild bird seed, the kind of aisle where a customer who came in for three specific varieties can actually find all three.

The garden side runs deep too. Seed beans and vegetable seed, nursery plants and bedding stock, and a run of organic products broad enough that customers single it out. Reviewers keep returning to the same word for the inventory: everything, and then some. If the co-op doesn't have what you're after, the staff have a reputation for telling you exactly where else in town to find it, which is not the behavior of a store worried about the sale in front of it.

Beyond the store

Blue Ridge is a working agricultural cooperative, not just a shop, and a good deal of what it does never crosses the retail counter. The co-op runs crop services, agricultural chemical spraying, and agricultural fertilizing for growers who need acreage handled rather than a bag carried to the truck. It delivers feed and farm supply. It fills propane cylinders. These are the unglamorous services that keep a farm running between planting and harvest, and they're the reason a 53-foot semi occasionally has to thread its way into the lot on a delivery run.

That freight traffic tells you something about the operation. Truckers who've backed a full trailer into the tight space here mention the forklift operator by temperament: respectful, patient, in-and-out in an hour, good vibes. Delivery runs 8am to 4pm, and drivers report the yard allows overnight parking. It's a small detail, but it's the kind of thing a genuine supply co-op gets right because it deals with the supply chain every day.

The counter

What comes up again and again, across years of reviews, is the help. People who know virtually nothing about gardening say the staff take the time anyway. A customer unsure what they needed for both durability and looks got walked through the options and left grateful. When someone needed special clips that weren't in stock, the co-op ordered them and had them in a couple of days. That combination, an extensive inventory plus people who'd rather solve your problem than move a unit, is what turns a farm-supply run into a place folks admit they don't need much of an excuse to visit.
