Crozet Park capital campaign

Help build the new pool, gym, and fitness center.

Claudius Crozet Park, the 22-acre community-owned park that bears my name, has been the village's gathering place since 1958. Now they're raising funds for a 45,000 sq ft year-round aquatics and fitness center: an indoor 8-lane pool, gymnasium, walking track, and community space.

What's inside the building

A community center for every season.

Crozet has outgrown the seasonal outdoor pool. The new building doubles year-round program capacity for swim lessons, youth sports, senior wellness, and adult fitness, on a single property the community has owned for almost seventy years.

  • 8-lane indoor pool

25-yard, deep-water, year-round. The existing outdoor seasonal pool stays open spring through fall. The new indoor pool gives Crozet swim teams, aquatic therapy, and lap swim a home in winter.

  • Multi-purpose gymnasium

Hardcourt for basketball and pickleball. Replaces the long drive to Charlottesville for indoor court time. Shared with after-school programs and youth sports.

  • Indoor walking track

Suspended track around the gym. Free for park members, open year-round, weather-proof for the village's many older residents who currently lose months of regular activity each winter.

  • Expanded fitness floor + group exercise studio

Cardio, strength, functional training, and a separate group exercise room. Replaces the converted-spaces fitness program the park has run for years.

  • Community room + after-school care

Lobby and meeting space for community programming. After-school care capacity for 120 children. A dedicated seniors' strength training space rounds out the wellness floor.

Why now

Approved 2021, resubmitted 2025, now public.

The project was originally proposed in 2019 and approved by the Albemarle County Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors in 2021. After a redesign for cost and community input, the park resubmitted the site plan in July 2025 and is now in the public phase of fundraising.

Park Board treasurer Jane Shutt and board member Joel Denunzio have been leading the financial design: a hybrid model of bank financing plus capital fundraising. Of the $23M projected total, the campaign aims to raise $15M from the community, with the remainder financed and repaid through membership and program revenue. Within two years of opening, the operation is projected to be self-sustaining.

"From the Gators swim team, to Peachtree baseball and softball, to the dog park, this is where our community gathers."
