Overview

You drive up for the view, and you don't have to be told twice which one they mean. The road climbs Carters Mountain in switchbacks until the valley drops away behind you, and then the groves open out and there's Charlottesville laid flat below, the Blue Ridge stacked up beyond it, and Monticello a few ridgelines over. People come for the apples and the peaches, and they get those. But the thing everyone remembers is standing at the top with a paper bag of fruit, looking at all that distance.

It's one of the orchards under the Chiles Family Orchards banner, a farming operation the family traces back to 1912, now into its fifth generation. Pick your own, or let them pick

The heart of it is the fruit, and the fruit changes with the calendar. In summer it's peaches and nectarines, white and yellow, sun-ripened and heavy on the branch. You can go into the rows and pull them off the tree yourself, or skip the labor and buy them pre-picked at the stand. Come fall it's apples, and October up here is its own event, thousands of people winding up the mountain for crisp fruit and the turning leaves.

Picking conditions shift day to day, sometimes hour to hour, depending on weather and how many people have come through before you. That's the honest reality of a pick-your-own farm, and the orchard is upfront about it, they post current availability rather than promise you a fixed harvest. The Country Store

Not everyone climbs the mountain to bend over a peach tree, and the Country Store is where the rest of the visit happens. It's stocked with the orchard's own apple butter, which comes in more than one variety and which the family will happily point you toward recipes for, along with bakery treats, specialty foods, and gifts. There's Carter Mountain Wine, too, if you want to take the view home in a bottle.

This is the part of the operation that runs year-round in spirit, the place that turns a fruit-picking trip into a lingering one. You can walk in with no plan and walk out with cider donuts and a jar of something to spread on toast in December.

Thursday nights on the mountain

From April through September, the orchard leans into what it has that nobody else does, the best sunset in Charlottesville. The Thursday Evening Sunset Series runs 6 to 9 PM each week with live music and food trucks, and the crowd settles in along the top of the mountain to watch the light go down over the valley. It's become one of the region's standing summer traditions, equal parts date night, family outing, and reason to stay put after the store closes.

The orchard is open daily, 9 AM to 6 PM, and the mood is unhurried. There are visitor guidelines worth a glance before a busy weekend, a courtesy that keeps peak days from turning chaotic. And the whole place runs, in part, on the sun it sits under: the Chiles family has invested in solar and talks openly about stewardship as a matter of course, not marketing, which tracks for people who've been working the same ground for a century.
