Overview

Twice a year, once in May and once in October, the lawns of Claudius Crozet Park fill with white tents, and the ordinary work of a community park gives way to more than 125 artists laying out their year's labor on folding tables. The Crozet Arts & Crafts Festival calls itself Central Virginia's premier juried arts and crafts event, and the word that matters most in that phrase is juried: the fine artists and contemporary craft artisans who exhibit here come from around the country and have to be accepted first. What ends up under the tents is not a flea market. It is painting, ceramics, woodwork, textiles, jewelry, glass, and the rest of the handmade trades, gathered in one green bowl of land in the foothills of the Blue Ridge.

The festival has been doing this since 1980, and it was never designed to make money for itself. It was started to support and benefit Claudius Crozet Park, the non-profit, community-owned and operated park that hosts it. All proceeds go back to the park, a 501c3 that can provide a tax donation letter for a gift of any size. That arrangement has quietly shaped the event's character over the decades.
