Overview

Founder Mike has been working in carpentry and home repair since 1978, and after retiring from law enforcement he started HandyMike in 2016 to keep serving the area he and his wife Jan have called home for more than thirty years. The result is a Class A contractor (license number 2705176200) that occupies an unusual middle ground in the local trades: bigger and more credentialed than the one-truck handyman, but still small enough that the same crew who hangs your mirror can also frame you an addition. From its base at 1575 Avon Street Ext in Charlottesville, the company works throughout Charlottesville and Albemarle County, which puts Crozet comfortably inside its range.

What sets HandyMike apart from a typical odd-jobs outfit is the depth of the roster. The company runs two lead carpenters, each with a helper, and keeps a Master Electrician on staff, meaning a single call can cover work that would otherwise mean juggling three separate contractors.

What they do

The honest short answer is: most of it. The carpentry side handles the unglamorous but essential list, repairing and installing siding, roofing, trim, soffit, fascia, wood rot, decking, door jambs, fencing, support posts, and beams. Decks are a specialty in their own right, whether that means building new, rehabbing old, or staining what you already have; they work in clear pine, composite, and exotics like Ipe. Windows and doors get repaired when the trim and jambs can still be saved and replaced when they can't, and they'll cut in a new opening where none existed before.

Because a Master Electrician is on the team, the electrical work runs the full range, from swapping out a receptacle, ceiling fan, or light fixture to upgrading a home's entire electrical service or installing a generator. The plumbing they take on is deliberately scoped as light work, meaning fixtures like faucets, toilets, sinks, hose bibs, and garbage disposals; for a water heater or the harder jobs, they'll bring in someone they trust rather than pretend otherwise. That candor runs through the whole operation. On gutters, for instance, they'll repair, clean, inspect, and re-secure, and install or remove gutter guards, but they say plainly that they won't install a full new gutter system.

The rest of the menu is the stuff every homeowner accumulates: drywall and even plaster repair, tile backsplashes and shower floors, power washing (with chemicals chosen to spare your plants), fencing from picket to hog wire to stockade, and a long honey-do list of assembling furniture, hanging artwork, mending fences, and finishing projects other people started and abandoned. There's also a genuinely practical specialty in wet basements: the company's stance is that nearly all basement water comes from bad grading at the foundation or overflowing downspout drains, and that fixing those can save a homeowner from tens of thousands of dollars in foundation work.

The bigger jobs

For work that outgrows a repair call, HandyMike runs a remodeling and additions division called Genesis. This is where basement remodels, kitchen and bathroom renovations, garages, and custom living spaces live, handled by the same team and the same standards. They'll take a basement from studs to paint, including the ejector pump, egress windows, and wiring.

Two smaller categories are worth calling out because they suit older, tighter houses especially well. Micro-additions are essentially a bump-out that adds three to six feet to a cramped room, often transforming how it functions without the cost of a full addition. And when a full addition is warranted, whether a single room or a whole master suite, they'll build it to spec.
