Overview

One block from Charlottesville's downtown, in a brick building full of studios, McGuffey Art Center has been run by its own artists since 1975. It calls itself one of the oldest artist cooperatives in the country, and the arrangement is unusual enough to be worth stating plainly: the people who make the work also run the place. Roughly 45 artists rent studios inside the building, and more than 100 belong to the wider association that keeps it going. Beyond the galleries, the building is a warren of individual studios. McGuffey is open Tuesday through Sunday and closed Mondays. Tuesday through Thursday and Saturday it runs 10 AM to 6 PM; Friday it stays open late until 8 PM, which makes it an easy stop on a downtown evening; and Sunday it keeps shorter afternoon hours, 1 to 5 PM.
