Overview

Drive west out of downtown Crozet toward the mountains and the road opens onto Old Trail: a planned village laid out at the foot of the Blue Ridge, where townhomes and villas sit within walking distance of a small commercial center, and the front range of the mountains fills the western sky. It is not a subdivision in the usual sense. Old Trail is organized as four interconnecting villages, each with its own character, knit together around a Village Center of shops, restaurants, and homes stacked above the storefronts. The developers describe it in New Urbanist terms, the walkable-village language of the movement, and on the ground that mostly means you can get to dinner, a haircut, or a community event without getting back in the car.

The office and club address is 1005 Heathercroft Cir, Crozet, VA 22932, and the main line is (434) 823-8100. The village's own overview lives at oldtrailclub.com/the-village.

How the village is laid out

Old Trail is built as four villages that flow into one another. At the center is the Village Center, a mixed-use core where local businesses occupy the ground floors and residents live above and around them, in brownstone townhomes, attached villas, apartments over the retail, and a senior living community called The Lodge. To the east is Old Trail East Village, a compact cluster of architecturally distinct homes that front onto small urban parks, open space, and wetland and water-basin features. West of the center is Old Trail West Village, where some of the homes look out over the golf course, alongside elegant brownstones and villas. And Old Trail Village Highlands is the gateway area, a future-development section with sweeping views of the Blue Ridge front range and quick access to Interstate 64 and the Route 151 corridor, the scenic byway lined with wineries, breweries, farmers markets, and pick-your-own orchards.

The whole plan leans on the same three assets, stated plainly on the village's own materials: the views of the Blue Ridge, the schools, and the recreation. It bills itself as a place for all ages to live, work, and play, and the mix of housing types, from apartments to senior living to standalone homes, is clearly built to make that literal rather than a slogan.

What's open to the public

Much of Old Trail is residential, but several of its anchors are open to anyone, not just residents or members. The Old Trail Golf Club and its practice facility, the Swing Lab, run daily from 7:30am to 7:00pm. Alongside the course is Restoration Restaurant, a full-service restaurant open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner: Monday through Thursday 8am to 9pm, Friday 8am to 10pm, Saturday 10am to 10pm, and Sunday 10am to 9pm. The golf club and Restoration share an address at 5494 Golf Drive, Crozet, VA 22932, a short distance from the residential core.

The Swim Club sits separately at 380 Claremont Lane, Crozet, VA 22932, and rounds out the recreational side along with the event and wedding venue that operates out of the same club facilities.

If you want to reach a specific part of the operation rather than the general office, the Golf Pro Shop is at 434-823-8101 and Restoration is at 434-823-1841. The broader membership, golf, dining, swim, and events pages all branch off the same club site.

Village life and events

Old Trail describes itself around a simple idea, the one it puts at the top of its own pages: waking up in the place you'd want to be on a Saturday morning rather than the place you tolerate on a Monday. What that translates to, beyond the housing, is a calendar. The Village Center and golf facility host seasonal outdoor programming, family movie nights, craft fairs, markets, festivals, and community gatherings, most of it staged in and around the walkable center where residents already are.

For anyone weighing Crozet's western edge, that's the real distinction here. This isn't only a place to buy a house or a round of golf. It's a village center with locally owned shops, dining, and health and personal services clustered together, framed by the mountains, and open to the town around it. The businesses can be found in the Village Center and at the golf club and Restoration, and the fuller directory of who's currently in the village lives on the club's businesses page.
