Overview
The farmhouse dates to about 1836, which means it was standing for the better part of two centuries before anyone thought to plant the vines that now surround it. Today it sits on the grounds of Veritas Vineyard and Winery in Afton, at the foot of the Blue Ridge, and it has been given over to two of the oldest hospitalities there are: a bed to sleep in and a long dinner with wine. The house calls its own character "European Heritage meets Southern Charm," and the guest rooms wear that idea plainly enough, named for English counties and towns: Surrey, Cornwall, Derby, Somerset, Nottingham, Devon.
This is a small, family-owned operation, and it reads like one. Six bedrooms, a single dinner seating, a breakfast made from what the farm and the season provide. There is nothing here that scales; that seems to be the point.
The dining experience
Dinner runs Tuesday through Saturday, and it is a set affair rather than an à la carte one. The kitchen serves a four-course, prix fixe menu, and every course is paired with wine from the estate. There is one seating, at 6:30 p.m., and the evening opens a quarter-hour earlier: a glass of bubbly at 6:15 to welcome you before you sit.
You can take the meal in one of three indoor dining rooms, or you can eat outdoors in the Garden House, which the farmhouse describes as dining "in the vines." Both settings offer the full menu; the difference is whether you want a roof or a row of grapevines over your shoulder. Because the format is fixed and the seating is single, this is a dinner to reserve rather than to wander into. The current menu is posted on the restaurant page.
Staying the night
The bed-and-breakfast side is the reason the house exists in its present form: six bedrooms, described as luxurious, in what the farmhouse calls the heart of Virginia wine country. A farm-fresh breakfast comes with the room. Because the accommodations and the four-course dining share the same address, the natural way to use the place is to do both in sequence, which spares you the drive home in the dark after a wine-paired dinner.
The individual rooms each have their own page, so if a particular one appeals you can read about it before booking; the full list and current availability live on the accommodations page. Beyond the rooms and the restaurant, the property hosts events and retreats and keeps a set of gathering spaces for them, including a barn cottage among its accommodations.
Finding it
The Farmhouse at Veritas is at 72 Saddleback Farm, Afton, VA 22920, on the Veritas estate. The reservation and information line is (540) 456-8100, and the website is veritasfarmhouse.com. The wine you drink at dinner comes from Veritas Vineyard and Winery next door, so a night here is really an evening spent inside a single working vineyard: the grapes, the glass, the table, and the bed, all within a short walk of one another.
For visitors coming from Crozet, Afton sits just over the Nelson County line to the southwest, a straightforward drive out toward the mountains. It is close enough to be a local indulgence and far enough to feel like leaving town, which is a useful thing for a place whose entire proposition is slowing down for an evening.
