Overview

Drive west out of Crozet on Sugar Hollow Road until the pavement narrows and the Blue Ridge fills the windshield, and somewhere past the last of the orchards you reach a four-bedroom lodge set on more than twenty acres with the Moormans River running along its edge. This is not a cabin in the woods, and the owners are careful to say so. It is a full modern house dropped into a mountain setting, built to hold a crowd, with the wildlife feeding in the front yard and the mountains close enough to walk into.

The property sits in Western Albemarle County, in the White Hall area, roughly thirty minutes from Charlottesville and the University of Virginia. Skyline Drive, the Sugar Hollow Reservoir, and the trails of Shenandoah National Park, including the Appalachian Trail, are all within reach on foot or a short drive. So are Wintergreen's skiing, Monticello, and the wineries, breweries, and distilleries that thread through this corner of the county.

The house

The main level is finished in cherry flooring with mahogany interior siding, and it is laid out for gathering. There is a large eat-in kitchen, a formal dining area, a bar, a pool table, an exercise room, and two stone fireplaces. The open plan pulls the mountain views into nearly every room, which is the whole point of the place: it works for large groups that want to be together without being on top of one another.

Sleeping quarters are downstairs on the terrace level. Two king master suites come with their own televisions, private baths, and deep soaking tubs. A third room holds a queen with a television, and a fourth has two queen beds. The terrace level also has a laundry room and a family room with its own stone fireplace, a quiet corner set aside for reading or a slower conversation while the rest of the house carries on above.

Amenities run to air conditioning, four televisions, satellite service, a DVD player, an outdoor patio, and a gas grill. Between the covered porch, the patio, and the grill, a good stretch of the stay is meant to happen outdoors, watching the light change on the ridgeline.

Who it's for

The lodge markets itself squarely at groups: weddings, reunions, corporate retreats, UVA events and graduations, family weekends, or simply a quiet getaway. With four bedrooms across four and a half baths and a main floor built around a bar and a pool table, it is sized for the kind of visit where several households share one roof. The frontage on the Moormans River and the stocked trout lake nearby give the outdoorsy members of the party something to do; the porch and its Blue Ridge views handle everyone else.

For the days when the fresh air is enough and no one wants to drive, the surrounding country does the work. For the days when it isn't, the owners point guests toward the local history within easy reach, Monticello, Ash Lawn-Highland, Michie Tavern, and UVA's Rotunda and grounds, along with the orchards, vineyards, and tasting rooms scattered through Albemarle.

Rates and booking

The regular daily rate is $400, with weekends, holidays, and peak dates at $650. Weekly and monthly rates are available, and there is a two-night minimum. Payment is accepted through PayPal, Visa, and Mastercard, and the lodge asks guests to contact them directly to confirm availability and ask about discounted rates.

The lodge sits at 6472 Sugar Hollow Rd, Crozet, VA 22932. To check dates or ask about a longer stay, call 434-531-7452 or reach out through thelodgeinsugarhollow.com.
