Overview
Walk into Wendell House and the first thing you notice is how much is packed into it without feeling crowded. This is a mercantile shop in the old sense of the word: a little of everything, chosen with care. Whimsical vases with faces on them share space with foot cream, dog treats, plant-based cheese, pressed-flower jewelry, and a wall of pantry goods you'd be happy to eat your way through. It sits in the Old Trail neighborhood of Crozet, and it is the kind of place people describe by listing the things they walked out with that they hadn't planned on.
Owners Sarae and Rick Lewis opened Wendell House in 2024, after, by their own account, more than a decade of dreaming about running an adorable little shop together. When the timing finally worked, they took it. The result is an eclectic neighborhood store built around one idea: bring a little joy, color, and charm to your life, mostly by way of things other people made by hand.
What's on the shelves
The through-line here is thoughtful gifts and good local goods. You'll find locally crafted pottery and jewelry, candles and soaps, backyard and patio garden supplies, fair-trade kitchen goods and decor, and a shelf of toys, games, and stuffed animals. On the food side, there are locally farmed meats, dairy, and eggs, plus simple-to-make meals and the makings of a charcuterie board.
A few standouts give the flavor of the place. BRH Pottery out of Charlottesville makes what the shop calls delightfully whimsical vases, full of personality — they sold through the first order fast enough that a second one followed. Sly 3 is a fast-paced family card game created and produced by a family in nearby Ivy, and the Lewises will tell you it passed muster with their own family. Miss Daisy Dee, a Crozet maker, does a line of Ha-meow-lton pins inspired by the hit musical, along with options the shop cheerfully describes as a little more macabre. And Rebel Cheese, an award-winning plant-based cheesemaker from Austin, has apparently brought more new faces through the door than any other single brand they carry.
The local shelf
Wendell House leans hard on Virginia makers, and some of them are practically neighbors. Julie Ellyn Designs, based in Crozet, handcrafts nature-inspired jewelry, often set with real pressed flowers. Pure Calia, also local, is run by Tonya, who has built a following one free sample of foot cream at a time. Snuffies, another Crozet operation, makes snuffle mats — the folded fabric puzzles you tuck treats into so your dog can hunt them out (Skittles not recommended).
Beyond those, the roster of partners runs long: local artisans like Just Saying Candles, North Mountain Candle, Yarn Barn, and Blue Ridge Beeswax; regional farms and food producers; fair-trade cooperatives such as Ten Thousand Villages and Matr Boomie; and mission-driven names like Thistle Farms. The pantry pulls from Virginia and its neighbors — coffee, chocolate, hot sauce, pierogi, kombucha, chips, crackers — alongside a handful of well-loved brands from farther afield. It adds up to a store that changes shape as new things come in, which the owners say happens constantly.
