Overview
Moore's Creek does most of the work at Azalea Park. It enters at one end and threads the entire length of the property, curling along the southern edge so that the water is never far from wherever you happen to be standing. On the north side, a screen of trees and natural buffer separates the park from the neighborhood homes behind it. Between the two runs 23 acres of level ground, which is a rarer thing than it sounds in this corner of Virginia, and level ground is what makes a park like this useful: room for a ball field, a playground, a place to let the dog run, and a creek to walk along.
The park sits off Old Lynchburg Road at the southern edge of the City, close enough to Interstate 64 that you can reach it quickly and far enough into its own pocket of trees that the highway falls away once you're inside. The City assembled the land in two acquisitions from the Bellmead Corporation in 1965, and the shape of it — long, flat, hugged by water — still reads as a piece of creek bottom that someone had the sense to keep open.
On the grounds
The 23 acres are put to plain, practical use. There's a baseball and softball diamond and a basketball court for anyone who came to play something. There's a playground for the smaller set. There are gardens, restrooms, and parking, which are the unglamorous features that decide whether a park actually gets used or just admired from the road. Water access along Moore's Creek rounds it out.
The creek is the throughline. It gives the park its length and its edge, and it's the reason the Rivanna Trail system routes through here — the trail follows Moore's Creek right across the property, so Azalea Park is both a destination and a link in a longer chain of walking. If you're moving along the Rivanna Trail, you pass through; if you came just for the park, the same path gives you a creekside walk without having to plan a whole outing around it.
Bringing the dog
Azalea Park is set up for dogs, with rules that reward paying attention. Dogs are to be leashed and under control in the park proper, but there's a fenced enclosure set aside for off-leash time, where the requirement shifts to voice control — the dog stays under command even when it's not on a lead. A plastic bag dispenser is provided at the enclosure, and cleaning up after your dog isn't optional. It's the kind of arrangement that works as well as the people using it, which is to say most days it works fine.
Hours and getting there
The gates keep long hours: the park is open every day, 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM, which covers a sunrise walk and an after-dinner one in the same day. You'll find it at 304 Old Lynchburg Rd, Charlottesville, VA 22902, off Old Lynchburg Road near I-64. The City of Charlottesville's facilities listing for the park gives a phone number of (434) 970-3260 and posts details online at charlottesville.gov.
For Crozet folks, it's a short hop toward town — an easy stop when you want a flat creekside walk, a fenced spot to tire out the dog, or a ball field that isn't booked solid. Nothing about Azalea Park is trying to impress you. It's a working neighborhood park with a good creek running through it, and on most afternoons that turns out to be exactly enough.
