Overview

Claudius Crozet Park is not a county park, and the distinction matters to the people who run it. It is community-owned and community-operated, 22 acres of green space that has been in continuous operation since 1958, kept going by the people of Western Albemarle rather than by a line item in a municipal budget. That fact shapes almost everything about the place: the fields, the pool, the dog park, and the festivals all exist because the community decided they should, and keeps deciding it, year after year.

Sit at the edge of the park on a warm evening and you get the range of it in one view. There are baseball and softball diamonds, home to the Peachtree Baseball and Softball program, and soccer fields where practices run late into the light. Paved walking paths loop the grounds. A swimming pool runs year-round, and the Crozet Gators Swim Team churns out laps there. Off to one side sits a fenced dog park; elsewhere, courts for pickleball, QuickStart Tennis, and basketball. It is a lot of recreation packed into a modest footprint, and it manages to feel like a shared backyard rather than a complex.

What's on the grounds

The list is genuinely long. Baseball and softball fields anchor the athletic side, alongside soccer fields and hard courts for basketball, pickleball, and tennis. There is fishing on the grounds and a network of trails and paved walking paths for people who came to move at their own pace rather than keep score. The dog park runs 1.5 acres and is fully fenced, which is the kind of specific amenity a growing community starts to appreciate quickly.

The swimming pool deserves its own mention. It operates year-round rather than shutting down after Labor Day, and it is the home water for the Crozet Gators, the park's swim team. Between the Gators, the diamonds, and the soccer fields, a lot of local childhood gets logged here.

The fitness center

Inside the park sits the Crozet Park Aquatics & Fitness Center, operated by acac Fitness & Wellness Centers. This is the membership side of the operation: year-round aquatics, indoor fitness, group exercise classes, and youth programming that includes after-school care and summer camps. It is worth understanding the structure — the park itself is the community-owned nonprofit, and acac runs the fitness and wellness facility inside it. If you want to join, that goes through acac.

The park is also in the middle of planning a significant expansion. The proposed future facility includes a competition and recreational pool, a multi-purpose gymnasium, an indoor walking track, and new exercise studios — a response, in the park's own words, to the increasing demands of a thriving community. Festivals and gatherings

For a lot of Crozet residents, the park is best known not for its fields but for its festival grounds. The Crozet Arts & Crafts Festival runs here twice a year, spring and fall, and by 2026 it reaches its 47th year — a long-running fixture that draws makers and crowds to the foothills of the Blue Ridge. In December, the Crozet Winter Brews Festival takes over the grounds for an afternoon celebration of winter beverages from Virginia producers. And in the warm months, a summer concert series brings live music to the park.

Taken together, these events do something the athletic facilities can't quite do on their own: they turn the park into the town's living room, the place where people who don't have a kid on a soccer team still show up several times a year.

The park is at 1075 Claudius Crozet Park, Crozet, VA 22932, along the Crozet Avenue and Three Notch'd corridor. The grounds open early and stay open late — 5:30 AM to 10:00 PM on weekdays, and 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM on Saturdays and Sundays — which suits both the pre-work walkers and the families arriving for an evening game. It is, in the end, a straightforward thing to explain and a hard one to replace: a piece of land the town has chosen to keep for itself, and keeps choosing, going on seven decades now.
