Overview
Tucked onto Elliewood Avenue, a short walk from UVA's historic Corner, this is the pizzeria that married two Virginia institutions under one roof. Crozet Pizza opened its original location west of Charlottesville in 1977 and never stopped drawing crowds. Buddhist Biker Bar, meanwhile, spent the years from the 1990s into the mid-2010s as a haunt for generations of UVA students. When the bar's lease came open and Crozet Pizza's owners were looking to expand, they took the space, rechristened it Crozet Pizza at Buddhist Biker Bar, and kept both names on the sign. The result is a place that leans into its own tagline: good vibes and pizza pies.
The person who made it what it is today is Jordan Brunk, brought on first as general manager and later the owner. Brunk is an alumnus of both UVA and the original Crozet Pizza, and he installed Crozet's singular dough-making process at the new address so the crust would taste like the real thing. He also turned the patio into a destination for live music on the Corner. On a good afternoon you'll find students, tourists, and townspeople sharing the same picnic tables under the shade of old walnut and magnolia trees.
What to order
The kitchen makes its pizzas, calzones, and salads by hand, and the menu rewards a little curiosity. Among the pies, the Capone keeps it simple and right: tomato, basil, fresh mozzarella, and extra virgin olive oil. The Fun Guy is the one for mushroom lovers, built on a garlic base with mushroom, caramelized onion, shaved parmesan, and basil. If you want the everything-on-it approach, the Special piles on pepperoni, sausage, onion, mushroom, and green pepper, while the Feisty Italian brings pepperoni, Italian sausage, banana pepper, and basil.
Start with the garlic knots, dusted with romano and served with marinara, or the Buddha Belly, a cheesy bread that arrives with both marinara and ranch for dipping. The calzones come in two camps: the Meathead (pepperoni, Italian sausage, meatball, ricotta) and the Veghead (spinach, tomato, ricotta, roasted garlic), each with a side of marinara. Salads run to a Greek with kalamata olives, feta, and pepperoncini, and a straightforward Caesar. And if you've saved room, the Nutella Pie is dessert built on the same dough: a lightly baked thin crust with Nutella, strawberries, and powdered sugar. There's a full bar too, with beer, wine, and cocktails to go with all of it. You can see the whole menu and order ahead through their online ordering page.
The patio and the Corner
The setting is a large part of the draw. The front patio strings lights over outdoor tables and sits under mature trees, which makes it a genuinely pleasant place to spend a summer evening, especially after 6 PM when the crowds thin. A brick facade faces the seating, and there's indoor room as well when the weather turns. The freight trains that pass close by are part of the ambiance rather than a nuisance. For anyone planning something bigger, the space is set up for events across four distinct areas, indoors and out, with details on their events page.
