Overview

A child who stumbles over a sound, grips a pencil the wrong way, or freezes at the edge of a group of peers is not a problem to be fixed so much as a person to be met. That is the premise the Crozet Speech & Learning Center works from. Set along Rockfish Gap Turnpike near the Old Trail side of town, it is a place where a speech therapist, an occupational therapist, and a reading tutor might all be working within a few doors of one another on any given weekday, each with a single child and a specific goal in mind.

The center calls itself a family-centered facility, and it means the phrase literally. Its stated mission is to provide assessment and treatment across all areas of childhood development for children from preschool through high school. That is a wide span of ages and an even wider span of needs, and the practice is built to hold both: the toddler working on first words and the teenager working through an individualized education plan can both find a chair here.

What they work on

The range of services is unusually broad for a single practice, and it is organized around the idea that a child rarely needs help in just one dimension. Under one roof there is speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, reading and writing tutoring, and math tutoring. There are social skills groups for children learning to read a room and take turns, and behavioral counseling for those who need more support regulating big feelings. There are formal evaluations, enrichment classes, music therapy, and parent coaching. For families navigating school systems, the center offers IEP and school support services, and telehealth is available for those who cannot always make the drive.

The specific skills the therapists name give a clearer picture than any list of departments. They work on articulation and stuttering, on auditory and sensory processing, on handwriting and fine motor development, on receptive and expressive language, on visual motor skills and daily living skills. Ready, Set, Grow is an occupational therapy-focused summer camp running July 13 to 17, 2026, for children ages six to eight, meeting mornings from 8:30 to 12:30. It is led by Hina Mittal, MOT, OTR/L, a pediatric occupational therapist, and the description leans on small-group sessions and organic play rather than drills, with just-right challenges built around co-regulation, social interaction, and fine motor skills. The design is meant to keep momentum through the summer months instead of surrendering them.

Spreading Roots

The center also keeps a blog it calls Spreading Roots, and it is worth a look even for families not currently enrolled. The posts turn ordinary household moments into low-key therapy: shaving cream as a tool for expressive language and sensory play, a grocery run reframed as a language session, everyday objects repurposed for home practice, five strategies for encouraging early language, and a piece on drawing out speech and language while reading with your child. The intent is stated plainly: to strengthen communication with families and increase carryover at home, so that the work does not end when a session does. It is a small, practical extension of the center's larger belief that a child's development is a shared project between the clinic and the kitchen table.
