Overview

The drive out to Greenwood puts you in a different frame of mind than the one you left Crozet with. The road narrows, the orchards open up, and then Chiswell Farm & Winery sits ahead of you on its rise of ground, a historic Jeffersonian estate with panoramic views of the Virginia countryside. This is wine-country land in the truest sense, and the tasting room here is built to let you sit with that view rather than rush past it.

Chiswell is one of the properties in the Chiles Family Orchards fold, which is worth knowing before you go, because it explains a good deal about the place. The same family that grows peaches down the road at Chiles Peach Orchard is behind the glass in your hand, and the connection is not just corporate. The winery welcomes guests ages 21 and up.

What to pour

The heart of a visit here is the tasting flight. You can build your own from the list or take one of the house recommendations, and if you want to taste what the judges tasted, there's a Governor's Flight assembled from recent award winners. That's not an idle boast. Six of Chiswell's wines were recognized in the 2026 Virginia Governor's Cup, and two of them came home with gold: the 2023 Meritage and the 2023 Merlot. Silver medals went to the 2021 Meritage, the 2022 Petit Verdot, the 2023 Petit Manseng, and the 2024 Sauvignon Blanc. The winery had already earned gold in both the 2025 Governor's Cup and the Monticello Cup, so the recognition is a pattern rather than a one-off.

What that range tells you is that Chiswell is playing on both sides of the Virginia field. The Bordeaux-style reds, the Meritage blends and the Petit Verdot, are the serious end of things. The whites lean toward the grapes that have made the Monticello region's reputation lately, Petit Manseng chief among them, a variety that ripens well in this climate and holds onto its acidity.

That same Petit Manseng turns up in one of the more approachable things on the list. The Summer Fruit Spritzer is a fizzy seasonal drink built on dry Petit Manseng, fresh mint, and peaches hand-picked from the family's own Chiles Peach Orchard. It's the kind of pour that only makes sense at a place like this, where the fruit and the wine come from the same few miles of ground, and it's a good argument for visiting in warm weather when you can drink it on the estate with the view doing its work.

Making a day of it

If a single visit turns into a habit, the winery runs the Crown Club, the Chiles Family Orchards wine and celebration membership. The way they describe it, it's less a discount program than a way of joining a tight-knit community around Virginia wine, sharing what the region grows across the year. For anyone who finds themselves driving out to Greenwood more than a couple of times a season, it's the natural next step.

Chiswell also sits on the Monticello Wine Trail, the appellation that Wine Enthusiast named its Wine Region of the Year for 2023, so a stop here fits neatly into a larger loop through the wineries clustered around Charlottesville and Crozet. Hours run Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 11 AM to 6 PM, with the doors staying open later on the weekend: Friday until 8:30 PM and Saturday until 7 PM. Sunday is 11 AM to 6 PM. The winery is closed on Tuesday. Those Friday evenings are the move if you want to catch the light going long over the fields, glass in hand, which is really the whole point of driving out this far.
