Overview

Drive up into the Blue Ridge foothills above Afton and the rows start before the tasting room does. Hazy Mountain farms 86 acres under vine, split between its home vineyards here in Afton and a second site out in Swoope, and the whole operation is built on a simple idea: let the vineyards speak for themselves and tell the story of what their soils have to offer. That is not a small claim in Virginia wine country, where plenty of labels buy grapes and blend a house style. Hazy Mountain is estate-grown, family-owned, and pointedly interested in place.

The land it sits on is worth understanding, because it is the reason this winery exists in two counties at once. Hazy Mountain's plantings straddle Virginia's two greatest growing regions, representing both the Monticello AVA around Charlottesville and the Shenandoah Valley AVA on the far side of the ridge. Same family, same winemaking hand, two distinct expressions of Virginia soil. The Afton vineyards catch the eastern slopes; Swoope sits in the valley. What ends up in the glass is meant to carry that difference rather than smooth it over.

In the tasting room

The tasting room is open seven days a week, which in this stretch of wineries is not a given. Doors are at 11 AM daily, running until 7 PM Sunday through Thursday and staying open to 9 PM on Friday and Saturday for those long summer evenings when nobody's in a hurry to drive back down the mountain.

You can walk in and pour, but the winery clearly wants you to sit with the wines a little longer than that. Guided tastings are offered every day of the week, a walk-through of the lineup with someone who can tell you why the Afton fruit reads differently from the Swoope fruit and what the soils are doing to each. Private guided tastings are available on request if you'd rather have the table to yourself. It's the kind of thing that rewards planning a visit around it rather than treating the tasting room as a quick stop.

The name says vineyards and brewery both, so beer shares the roof with the wine. If you're arriving with a group that doesn't all drink the same thing, that matters.

Wine club and taking it home

If a single afternoon isn't enough, Hazy Mountain runs a wine club with four membership tiers, each stepping up the benefits and access as you go. Members get discounts both in the tasting room and through the online shop, which is the practical way to keep drinking these bottles once you're back off the mountain. There's a collection you can order from directly, so the estate wines don't have to stay tied to a visit.

The vineyard doubles as a venue. Hazy Mountain hosts weddings and private events in dedicated event spaces on the property, the kind of setting where the ceremony has 86 acres of vines and the Blue Ridge for a backdrop.
