Overview

The conservatory is the thing you notice first. Glass House Winery takes its name from a real glass house, a light-filled room that lends the place its tropical flair and gives a Virginia vineyard the unlikely feel of a greenhouse in bloom. Out here on the far side of the ridge from Crozet, in the rolling farmland of Free Union, it is a small, particular operation: grapes on one side, a brewery now on the other, and homemade chocolates coming out of the kitchen in between.

The vineyard was founded in 2006 and sits on the Monticello Wine Trail, the cluster of central Virginia wineries that fans out from Charlottesville. Glass House describes its grapes as carefully grown and cultivated to reflect the terroir of the region, which is the polite winemaker's way of saying the fruit here tastes like the ground it came from. The result is a boutique list rather than a mass-market one, poured in a room built to catch the light.

What they pour

This is a winery that has quietly become more than a winery. The core is still the wine, made on site and described by the house as artisan, small-batch work. But the Glass House Brewery is now open too, so the same visit that starts with a glass of estate wine can end with a beer, an unusual combination for a Monticello Trail stop and a good reason to bring a group that can't agree on what to drink.

Then there are the chocolates. Glass House makes its own by hand, and they are not an afterthought bolted onto the tasting room; they are a stated part of the experience, sold by the box and paired naturally with what's in your glass. Between the wine, the beer, and the chocolate, a tasting here has more moving parts than most, and that is clearly the intention.

If you want to take some of it home, the winery ships through Vinoshipper, and there is a wine club and a mailing list for people who keep coming back.

Making a weekend of it

Glass House frames itself as a weekend away rather than a quick stop, and the property is built to back that up. There is a bed & breakfast on site, so you can taste in the afternoon and not have to drive the winding roads back over the mountain afterward. Weekends also bring live music, with local artists playing the room, and the winery runs a calendar of events worth checking before you go, including the occasional chef's dinner and brunch. It is the kind of place that rewards a whole afternoon over a fifteen-minute flight.

The tasting room is open Wednesday through Sunday, opening at noon each day. Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday it closes at 5:30 PM; Friday it stays open until 9:00 PM and Saturday until 8:00 PM, which are the evenings to aim for if you want to catch music and the last of the light in the glass house. It is closed Monday and Tuesday. Given the live-music weekends and the ticketed dinners, it is worth confirming the schedule and reserving ahead rather than arriving cold.
