Overview

The Cabana Deck at Knight's Gambit is the kind of spot that makes an argument for itself before you've said a word: comfy couches, airy curtains moving in the breeze, umbrellas angled against the afternoon sun, and past all of it the vineyard rows running out toward the mountains. It seats twenty, and the vineyard's own copy asks, not unreasonably, "Need I say more?" The honest answer is no. This is a working estate winery a short drive from Crozet, where the wine in your glass was grown on the ground you're looking at.

Knight's Gambit sits at 218 Knole Farm Ln, Charlottesville, VA 22901, on the eastern edge of the Crozet countryside where the vineyards and horse farms start to give way to the Blue Ridge. It's an estate operation, which in wine terms means the grapes are grown here rather than bought in — the label reflects the land, not a supply chain.

What's in the glass

Six estate-grown wines, all of them from the property. You can taste your way through the whole lineup in a flight, which the vineyard rolled out as a way to sample all six during regular tasting room hours — the one exception being live-music sessions, when the flights pause. Everything is also available by the glass or by the bottle, so there's no obligation to commit to a full pour before you know what you like. If you want to take some home or send a bottle ahead, the estate wines can be ordered directly through the vineyard's online shop.

The setup rewards a slow afternoon rather than a quick stop. A flight gives you the full range of what the property makes; a glass or a bottle lets you settle into the one that landed. Either way you're drinking wine grown within sight of the tasting room, which is the whole point of an estate.

The Cabana Deck

The deck is the vineyard's signature perch, and it's bookable. Billed as a semi-private micro-venue, it's a furnished space with seating for up to twenty, built for day dates, family gatherings, small parties, and the general business of lingering with a view. The standard rental runs $200 for a two-hour block and includes two bottles of Knight's Gambit wine of your choosing — a nice bit of math, since the wine is folded into the price rather than added on top.

One firm ground rule, set by Virginia's ABC laws rather than by the vineyard: no outside alcohol. What you drink on the deck comes from Knight's Gambit. Larger groups and longer stretches can be arranged for an increased fee (wine not included in those cases), handled through the vineyard's weddings and private-parties inquiries. Planning a visit

The tasting room keeps a rhythm built around evenings and weekends. It's closed Monday through Wednesday. Thursday it opens for the evening, 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Friday it runs a longer stretch, 2:00 to 8:00 PM. Saturday is the full day, noon to 8:00 PM, and Sunday winds down a little earlier, noon to 6:00 PM. If live music is on, remember that the flights step aside during those sets — the wine by the glass and bottle carries on.
