Overview

The drive out Plank Road climbs into the foothills of the Blue Ridge, and somewhere past North Garden the vineyard opens up below the mountains. Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards calls itself a culinary vineyard, and the phrase is more literal than it sounds: here the vineyard, the garden, the farm, and the kitchen are meant to be read as a single sentence. This is a boutique winery in the Monticello Wine Region, sitting on land that belongs to the Jefferson Heritage Trail part of Monticello's viticultural area, and the estate leans into that lineage rather than dressing it up.

The Tasting Room is the front door to all of it. It sits open Tuesday through Sunday, 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and closed on Mondays, and if you plan to sit down for table service, reservations are recommended. You can book a table through Resy. The whole place is built around the long view: the vines, the garden beds, the ridgeline behind them.

In the glass

Pippin Hill makes estate wines across the full range, and you can taste your way through whites, reds, and rosés, plus bundles when you want to take a set home. The house describes its approach as a fresh twist on Old World winemaking, and the wines carry the estate's own names. Their fall bundle, for instance, has gathered a Cannon Red, a Petit Manseng, and a Ridge Reserve under one label, and sparkling shows up on the menu too by way of a Blanc de Blanc. The vineyard was the founding vision for this property, and after a decade of the land bearing fruit, the terroir here has become the basis of what they pour.

If you fall for a bottle, there's a way to keep the relationship going. The Heritage Wine Club takes its name and spirit from the Jefferson Heritage Trail, and membership reframes the visit as an ongoing one rather than a single afternoon. There's a retail side, too, some of it now online, including the #PippinPups line of wine-bottle squeaky toys, collars, and leashes for anyone who wants their dog in on it.

Garden to table

The food at Pippin Hill is not an afterthought to the wine; the two are written together. The menus and products are drawn from the estate's own garden, farm, and kitchen, and the kitchen's stated aim is fresh, local, sustainable, and seasonal. That plays out on a menu that turns over with the calendar. A recent fall lineup ran to a Butternut and Pancetta Tagliatelle poured alongside Chardonnay and a Pumpkin Coffee Cake set next to the Blanc de Blanc, each dish built to sit beside a specific pour. In the cooler months the Tasting Room adds wood-fired pizza on Fridays through Sundays, running classic cheese, pepperoni, and a rotating specialty, again paired to the estate's wines.

For visitors who want to go past the table, Pippin Hill runs a set of on-site experiences. The Estate Tour & Tasting takes you further into the wine than a glass alone would, and the Cooking School gets you into the garden-to-table cooking itself, sleeves rolled up. Group experiences round out the offering for larger parties.

Weddings, events, and staying over

Pippin Hill is also an all-season, full-service events venue, and weddings are clearly a large part of the operation. The pitch is a wedding without last-minute worry: the wedding packages fold in the estate's culinary team for food and wine along with a full complement of event services, with the Granary as a signature gathering space. It's the kind of place that photographs the same in October leaf-light as it does in high summer.

And you don't have to leave when the tasting ends. Just down the hill, Pippin Hill has restored an 1820s inn, the Crossroads Inn, which pairs its early-nineteenth-century bones with modern comforts for anyone extending a vineyard afternoon into a Wine Country weekend.
