Overview

Riverview Park sits at the end of Chesapeake Street, where the pavement runs out at the eastern edge of Charlottesville and the land tips down toward the Rivanna River. It is 26.6 acres of riverfront: a wide paved lot, a kiosk, a playground, a scatter of benches, and an open field that mostly asks to be used for a picnic blanket or a game of catch. The river does the rest of the work. This is the kind of park you drive to the end of a street to find, and then wonder why you had never been before.

The ground has a small history worth knowing. The land was donated by Riverview Cemetery in 1974 to be held as public space, and by 1989 it had been renovated into the park that stands today. That lineage shows in how unfussy the place is: no grand entrance, no gimmick, just a field, a river, and a trailhead.

On the trail

The reason to come is the Rivanna Trail, which begins right here at Riverview Park and meanders north for roughly 2.3 miles along the river, crossing under Free Bridge and Route 250 East. This stretch is paved and handicapped-accessible, which makes it a rare thing among river trails around here: genuinely open to strollers, wheelchairs, and anyone who would rather not negotiate roots and mud to get a view of the water. Walkers, joggers, and cyclists all share it, and there are quiet spots along the bank for fishing or just watching the current go by.

A word of respect is owed to the route. The trail is a public right-of-way that in places crosses private property, maintained by Parks and Recreation, so the ask is simple: stay on the path and let the neighbors keep their privacy. The trail also connects into the larger Rivanna Trails Foundation system, a pedestrian loop that encircles the city and is kept up by a private non-profit. Start at Riverview and you are plugged into a much bigger network than the modest parking lot suggests.

For birders and dogs

Riverview Park is a designated stop on the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail, which is a polite way of saying the wildlife-watching here is good enough to be official. Bring binoculars, come early, and let the river corridor do what river corridors do for birds.

Dogs are welcome, with a rule specific enough to be worth memorizing. On the designated portions of the trail within the park, dogs are allowed off-leash on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays only. Every other day, and everywhere else in the park, they must be leashed and under control. The city also expects owners to clean up after their pets, and it makes that easy: there is a dispenser and waste receptacle near the kiosk stocked with plastic bags. Few parks hand you the bag and the rule in the same breath, and it is a good sign for how the place is kept.

Planning a visit

The park is open every day from 6 AM to 9 PM, which covers both the birder's dawn and the after-work evening walk. There is a large paved parking area at the trailhead, and the site is served by public transportation, so you can arrive without a car. The playground and open field make it an easy stop with kids; the benches make it an easy one without them.
