Overview

The Inn at Stinson Vineyards sits where you would want an inn to sit: inside the working vineyard itself, on Sugar Hollow Road, with the rows of vines running right up to the windows and the Blue Ridge rising behind them. There are four guest suites, each with a King bed and a view of the vines, and the whole thing is built around a simple proposition — that you should be able to wake up in Virginia wine country, walk downstairs to breakfast, and reach the nearest tasting room without getting in the car.

That last part is literal. The Stinson Vineyards tasting room is a short walk through the vines, next door, open to the public Thursday through Sunday from 11am to 5pm. Guests staying at the Inn can also have select Stinson wines waiting in the room on arrival, or buy them by the bottle during the stay. It is a rare arrangement — most wine-country lodging asks you to drive to the wine. Here the wine is the neighbor.

The rooms

Four suites, each described as uniquely designed, all with vineyard views, King-sized beds, ensuite bathrooms, and L'Occitane bath products. Individual rooms are booked for adults 21 and over. If you want to bring the whole family, the move is to book the Entire Inn, which takes over all four rooms and opens the property up as a private getaway rather than a shared house.

The common spaces reward a longer stay. The Den has a wood-burning fireplace, and in the colder months guests are welcome to build their own fires — kindling and firewood are provided. From May through August there is a saltwater pool with views out over the vineyard and the mountains; pool towels and plastic wine glasses come with it, so you can travel light. There is also an on-site private office, vineyard views included, with a comfortable chair, a standing desk, and fast internet — the kind of amenity that quietly assumes you might extend a weekend into the work week rather than cut it short.

Breakfast, and dinner if you plan it

Breakfast is included every morning and kept deliberately unfussy: self-service between 8:30 and 10:00am, a chef's selection of seasonal sweet and savory pastries from Praha Bakery that changes daily. Coffee and tea run 24/7. Dietary restrictions are handled with advance notice, so it is worth flagging anything when you book.

Dinner is a different, more deliberate affair, and only for guests who have reserved the Entire Inn. Those guests can arrange Private Chef Dinners and Cooking Classes — customized multi-course tasting menus paired with Stinson wines, booked directly through a list of approved chefs and subject to availability. It is not an everyday menu you can drop in on; it is something you set up in advance for a particular occasion. Inquiries go through the Inn.

The Inn is family-owned and part of the Townsman Collection, managed by VA Guesthouses, which also runs The Townsman Boutique Hotel on Charlottesville's Downtown Mall — a useful pairing if you want to split a trip between the quiet of the vineyard and the walkable bustle of downtown. But the reason to come out to Sugar Hollow is the setting itself: a small inn dropped into the middle of a vineyard, close enough to the Blue Ridge that the mountains sit in nearly every view, and close enough to the tasting room that the walk over is part of the day rather than an errand.
